The hardships of his youth, like the Nazi occupation of Poland and the loss of his father, made Karol think about becoming a priest. After the war had been over, Wojtyla entered and finished a seminary in Krakow and then spent many years preaching and writing for local Catholic printed media. In the late 1950s, he became an Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow and later on received the title of a Cardinal. In 1978 he was elected pope to become the first non-Italian born head of the Catholic Church for the last 400 years. During the times of his papacy, Pope John Paul II was one of the most traveling popes and was considered to be the one whose contribution to making people of all religions closer, more understanding and more tolerant to each other is remarkable. Pope Johan Paul II also contributed to abolishing and ending the Communist regimen in the countries of Eastern Europe. He died in April 2005 in the Vatican at the age of 84 and later on was proclaimed venerable by the next pope, Pope Benedict XVI.
