Ellis Marsalis Jr. was a legendary American jazz pianist, educator, and composer whose career spanned nearly seven decades and left a lasting mark on the history of jazz. He was born in 1934 in New Orleans and began playing the piano at the age of ten. In his youth, he also learned the saxophone and started performing at local clubs and venues in the early 1950s.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Marsalis devoted much of his time to teaching, mentoring a new generation of musicians while also writing poetry and articles focused on music and the arts. He later returned to active performance, particularly in the final decades of the twentieth century, when he played extensively with his family band, which included his sons.
