Queen Isabella of Castille and Leon was the Queen of the Spanish region of Castille who is remembered as a successful and progressive statesperson and reformer of the country. Born in 1451 in Castille and Leon, she grew up alongside her two brothers. Despite being a member of the royal family, Isabella had a very difficult childhood as her father died when the girl was only 3 years old and her teenage brother had to assume the duties of the King. During his reign, the situation in the country was really difficult. When Isabella was only 6 years old she got engaged to a relative of the King of Aragon, Ferdinand, who was a year younger than her. They got married when they were in their early 20s and Isabella had 7 children with Ferdinand. She became the Queen of Castille and Leon in the mid-1470s, after the death of her elder brother. The kingdom was in a critical condition after the war with Portugal, and Isabella spent lots of effort on fixing the government system and building a proper state. She made general reforms in the local police structure and a lot of attention was given to adopting a progressive legislative system and a criminal code. Isabella was focused on providing necessary financing and control of fiscal and other systems. She won the war of Granada and supported financially the expedition of Christopher Columbus. Queen Isabella of Castille and Leon died in 1504, at the age of only 53. In the mid-1970s she was granted a Catholic title of the Servant of God.
