An Indian chess grandmaster and former World Champion, Viswanathan Anand is widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of his generation. He was born in 1969 in a town in southern India where his mother taught him chess. He was educated in Chennai and polished his competitive chess skills before joining the professional circuit in the 1980s.
At 19, he was the first Indian to become a chess grandmaster. He competed in numerous international tournaments throughout the 1990s and in 2000 he was the first Asian player to win the FIDE World Championship. Anand became the world No. 1 in 2007 and successfully defended his title several times against top players like Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov and Boris Gelfand. In 2013, he handed over the title to Magnus Carlsen.
